everyone eventually suffers from high blood pressure. According to the
National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, adults age 55 and older who
don’t already have hypertension face about a 90% chance of developing
it at some time in their lives.Untreated hypertension greatly increases the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening and thickening of the arteries), kidney disease, heart failure and even dementia. People with severe hypertension -- a reading of 160/100 or higher -- almost always require treatment with medications. Your blood pressure is normal if it’s below 120/80. Good news: People with borderline or moderate hypertension can lower their numbers by 10 to 20 points with dietary changes and/or the use of supplements. That’s often enough to make medications unnecessary. Even patients who are already taking blood pressure drugs may be able to reduce the doses or get off the drugs entirely. Caution: Always talk to your doctor before taking any supplement or reducing or eliminating any medications. To keep blood pressure at healthful levels, limit (or eliminate) red meat and processed foods... increase consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains... stop smoking... and exercise for at least 30 minutes most days.
