![]() QSAC HEALTH TIPS THE HEALING POWER OF NUTSSpecial from Bottom Line/Health Most health-conscious people think of nuts as a delicious indulgence, too full of fat to enjoy on a regular basis. But the most recent research suggests that nuts are actually good for you. Eaten in moderation, they lower cholesterol levels even more effectively than olive oil, which has been highly touted for its cholesterol-lowering properties. GOOD AND BAD FATS It's true that nuts are fatty. The average nut derives more than half of its calories from fat. Some nuts, including Brazil nuts and macadamias, are approximately 70% fat. But when it comes to heart health, fats are not equal. Saturated fat--the kind that predominates in meat, dairy foods and many packaged foods--raises cholesterol levels. But unsaturated fat (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) has the opposite effect. And nuts are a terrific source of unsaturated fat. Study after study has shown that a diet rich in unsaturated fat lowers heart attack risk even more effectively than the low-fat diet advocated by the American Heart Association. Good news: More than 60% of the fat in almonds, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans and pistachios is monounsaturated. And roughly 70% of the fat in walnuts is polyunsaturated. QSAC WELCOMES NEW STAFF!
