Urgent Request for Help
Annie Piotrowski, one of QSAC's preschool teachers, has a 3-year old cousin in critical condition at Columbia Presbyterien Hospial awaiting a heart transplant. Eddie Casey's condition has worsened over the past few days and he is now on a ventilator in constant need of blood transfusions.

Annie asks that you please consider donating blood and possibly save a little boy's life.
Eddie is blood type O-negative. If you are not blood type O-negative, you can still make a donation to the New York Blood Center under the name Edward Casey and Eddie's family will receive monetary credit towards future transfusions (which are extremely expensive).

QSAC Health Tips

MAGNESIUM
Millions of Americans don’t get enough magnesium, a mineral that’s involved in literally hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body, many of which are related to the heart and blood vessels. Low levels of magnesium have been linked to hypertension, heart disease and heart attacks.

Magnesium has been called an “antistress” mineral because it relaxes muscles in blood vessels, as well as skeletal muscles. People who increase their intake of magnesium can experience significant drops in blood pressure.

Important: The diuretic drugs commonly used to treat high blood pressure can cause a decrease of magnesium. Soft water (treated tap water that contains few minerals), common in the US, contributes to low magnesium intake.

Recommendation: At least 320 mg a day of magnesium for women and 420 mg a day for men. Many researchers now believe that higher amounts -- up to 700 mg daily for men and women -- may be optimal. Legumes, whole grains and dark green vegetables are all high in magnesium. People who don’t eat a lot of vegetables or other plant foods should take daily supplements (150 mg, three times a day).
